I first heard of it over at Word of Shadow and soon after that I noticed it going on in some of the scenarios. The theory is you get a lot more renown if you make your own party for the scenario, and because you don't have to share any renown that 'you' earned you generally get a whole lot more then the rest of the peeps on your side. A lot of people in the game have said that they never heal those who make their own group to farm, and I know that if I was a healer neither would I. People may say that there is nothing wrong it or Mythic would have done something about it, but it seems to break a certain code in the game.
In my previous post I talked about the scenarios and how they differed from WoW's battlegrounds, how it was more important to get support your team and get the win then get the kills and damage, and I think this practice goes against that. Through the practise I've often seen these people at the top of the damage charts with a massive amount of renown, while the rest of their team had very little renown or experience having lost the match. Renown farming is selfish as the people care more about how they go individually in the scenario rather then how their team went (Whether they won or lost) as it doesn't effect them nearly as much. Then again, this entire post could be because as an Ironbreaker I'm useless at burst damage and can't farm renown myself...

I might have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one ;)
'Renown farming' can only effectively be done with a healer. Healers get +3-10 renown in T2 scenarios every time a HoT triggers. When in a group of 5, it usually gets split 5 ways, which explains all the +1/+2 coming up all the time. As a rune priest, it is very hard to kill anything, so naturally you rely heavily on your healing skills to pay the renown bills. If you 'solo group' a scenario as a rune priest/archmage, you can earn in excess of 2K renown. The only way you can earn that renown is if you effectively heal members of your group. Since you are solo grouped, you have to rely on watching the battle and healing the people that are actually taking damage. Useless healers will only heal the people in their group because they use the health bars on the side to determine when someone needs healing. This is great if you have a healer in your group (and in range), but crap if you don't. By that argument, I'd much rather have a renown farming healer on my side than a useless one, because I know I will be receiving a large amount of healing when I need it. The extra renown for healing acts as an incentive to be a good healer, which is very important for winning a scenario.
The other argument is, player's that don't contribute to the scenario as much (i.e. leechers) still receive 20% of all the XP and renown gained from being in the group. In other words, they exploit the fact that groups share everything and farm their way to the top by doing nothing. I would much rather a system that accurately allocates renown and XP based on contribution (ie. solo grouping).
Renown farmers aren't selfish, they're smart. Solo grouping only pays off if you work your ass off in a scenario, otherwise you may as well have stuck with the group.

All damage classes only get renown when they kill things, which sucks. Iron breakers can deal a large amount of damage (ask Melf), but it does help to have a healer at your back. My advice would be to know how to pick your targets, and move in and out of the front line so that you don't get picked on too much. You will also have a better chance of being healed if you visit your own back line every so often.
Have fun ;)
lol was waiting for you to comment and you sure didn't disappoint :P
I would rather not get into an argument over who is right, and you certainly made some valid points but what you said is not true for everyone, especially as you roll a healer; the majority are bright wizards who just nuke from a distance and do not actually 'support' the group.
I do know that Ironbreakers can churn out the dmg; I have topped dmg in T4 scenarios a number of times at lvl 30 and 31, beating many bright wizards and witch hunters, but we are hopeless without heals and as I said many people refuse to heal those who go solo. You advice is lost on me as I can't stand running back; I see my main function as charging straight to a squishie at the back and hammering him down...maybe I'm just not built for soloing :P
There are tactics and strategies to ensure maximum survival and there are ones to ensure maximum fun. If you can find a balance, then I suggest use that ;)
Until Mythic take an official stance on solo grouping in scenarios, we might have to agree to disagree =P
